Indonesia
Southeast Asia's largest economy, turning mineral wealth into industry
Overview
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago and Southeast Asia's biggest economy, with a young population of hundreds of millions spread across thousands of islands. Its economy spans commodities — coal, palm oil, nickel — alongside manufacturing and a fast-growing digital services sector.
The government has sought to move beyond exporting raw materials by restricting nickel ore shipments and encouraging domestic processing, drawing battery and electric-vehicle supply chains to industrial parks such as Morowali. A plan to relocate the capital to Nusantara in Borneo signals ambitions to rebalance growth away from crowded Java.
On the rise
Nickel processing, electric-vehicle supply chains and a vast domestic consumer market give Indonesia leverage few emerging economies hold — with infrastructure, skills and environmental standards shaping how much value stays at home.
